CNN Thinks You’re Stupid

CNN, trying to manufacture news out of some 16 year old getting pregnant:
Parents are struggling with what to tell their children after finding out that Britney Spears’ younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, is pregnant.
What “parents” did you interview, CNN? The parents cited in your story had no struggle whatsoever about what to tell their kids. It looks to me like they’re all exactly on target. So let’s see. A child pseudostar with a famous sister who has nothing whatsoever to do with the daily lives of millions of children got knocked up. This is a story? This is news? I think the only ones “struggling” here, CNN, are your editors. Most parents know exactly what to say.

Thanks CNN. I was looking for something to struggle with today.

I saw the heading but I didn’t read the article. Maybe CNN didn’t title the article correctly/well? If they are trying to help with parenting, I think it would not be a bad article. Since we have parenting books on how to talk to kids about sex and stuff, I think having an article on how to talk to kids about admiring one’s talent (I don’t know Spear’s sister at all…; does she have talent? like singing or dancing) but not admiring everything about that person is a good parenting resource. I have seen kids and even adults using famous people as “role models”… there’s got to be something that make them so rich and famous! I just do exactly what they do! Believe me… if they happened to surround themselves with the wrong group of friends, they WILL do whatever the rich and famous do (except for the part that they actually don’t have the money or fame). Of course, it all has to do with parenting, that seem obvious to most people, know the friends/buddies; teach them ethics and laws; and just listen (and other stuff too.)

See, Julia? You’re not struggling, either. You know exactly what to say to your kids, if anything. Yeah, yeah–it’s an editing problem. This story speaks to two of my pet peeves: sloppy “news” media and pop culture and its purveyors who think we should care about famous people and what they do. Or in this case, relatives of (in)famous people. It’s insulting. In tomorrow’s news, the cousin of one of Paris Hilton’s friends is thinking about not going to college!!

That’s a good point. My co-worker and I were just talking about it a few days ago. He told me about the South America maybe uniting their currencies creating an Union similar to the EU. I was like, “Where do you get your news? All the news I’ve been hearing is that Jessica Alba is pregnant!” Bad me… but I really didn’t see it on the headline of the online news stuff that I read.
