Oedipus Writ Small

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

It’s 10 p.m. and I’m itching in the worst way for bed and sleep. Her Hotness and I are exhausted after wrangling with numbers 3-5 for weeks at a time with no break, leaving little time and less energy for us and for numbers 1 and 2, who can pretty well take care of themselves, though they shouldn’t have to, yet, as there’s a whole lifetime of taking care of themselves just waiting to ambush them, but that’s fodder for another post.

We as dads have to take advantage of small windows when they open, and sometimes we work hard at opening them ourselves. It’s never easy, and we’re not always successful.

Boy 4 can put up a fight you wouldn’t believe when both he and I are aiming for the same small window of opportunity between Girl 2 going to sleep and Mothered Five collapsing into an inert, softly snoring lump. Sophocles and Freud were on the right path, though one was a bit melodramatic and the other had an unnatural fixation. I think maybe Madison Avenue “gets it” more realistically than either of them.

It’s a lie, guys. I’m here to tell ya, you cannot win that fight. Millions of years of evolutionary history are against you. For your own sake and that of your marriage, make peace with the babies, whatever their age. They’ll be gone in 18-25 years.

That clip is hilarious!!! Where do you find time to find these things? You know I rely on you to keep me up to date on the big wide world…..Good luck with the sleep thing - we’re still working on it.

You beat me to it on that clip. I knew I shoulda posted it last week! :)

It’s both hilarious and mildly disturbing. And encouraging to us men to lift the romance and minimise our pouting and spouting about the injustice of it all.

Really dunno if I wanna get on that baby’s bad side though.

@ Mich: BadDadRadio posted it a couple of weeks ago. I wish I could say it was my discovery. I’ll do my best to keep you up to date about the really important developments.

@ Pete: Well, you’ve trumped me often enough, it’s about time I beat you to something.

lol! Let’s put it down to a case of “Great minds” … at least your mind is great anyways, I’m still working on mine.

Truth be told, I held off using the clip because (as I said above) it’s kind of disturbing on one level (to me anyway) and I wasn’t sure how to use it. I really like the way you built on it. Man, at the risk of sounding crass, with four kids already filling up your life, I don’t know how you and your lovely wife found that private time to create the 5th!

  5. Joe Says:

Do tell: why is it disturbing? And who said it was private?
    ;-)

eww, sorry. That was tacky, even for me.

    Heh heh.
