Boy 4 loves imaginative play. We got him a kitchen set (complete with metal utensils and plastic and pasteboard foods) that he loves, and he likes to switch roles. I’ve never liked to join any of the five in that kind of play, starting with Girl 15. “Dad, can you play with me?” I’d usually have a good reason not to, which is terrible to say. I love spending time with them doing other things, but I’ve never been good at running around with Boy 7 playing Power Rangers or some other iteration of an action-drama cartoon for tweens.

That’s why this particular exchange was revealing:

Boy 4: You’re the boy and I’m the daddy, okay dad?
Me: Okay.
Boy 4: Ok, play.
Me: Daddy, can you play transformers with me?
Boy 4: (affecting a deep voice) Go ask Mommy.

I used to wonder how my kids perceive me, but I don’t anymore. Not because I know, but because I realize I don’t want to know.

Mich, all my lessons are hard! I don’t think I’ve ever learned anything without a knot on my head to go with it.

lol! That belongs in a sitcom. At least you’ve got time at 4 years old to turn that around.

Thanx for your transparency as always, Joe!
